SENATOR SMITH: Twenty-three all together?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: Twenty-three all together; before I was a passenger.
After that the boat was lowered down some distance, I should imagine probably parallel with C deck, when the quartermaster called up to the officer and said, "I can not manage this boat with only one seaman."
SENATOR SMITH: Where was this call from?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: As the boat was going down, I should think about the third deck. So he made this call for assistance, and the second officer leaned over and saw he was quite right in his statement, that he had only one man in the boat, so they said, "We will have to have some more seamen here," and I did not think they were just at hand, or they may have been getting the next boat ready. However, I was standing by the officer, and I said, "Can I be of any assistance? I am a yachtsman, and can handle a boat with an average man." He said, "Why, yes. I will order you to the boat in preference to a sailor."
SENATOR SMITH: Pardon me right there. Who was this man then in the boat?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: He was one of the quartermasters. The captain was standing still by him at that time, and I think, although the officer ordered me to the boat, the captain said, "You had better go down below and break a window and get in through a window, into the boat."
SENATOR SMITH: The captain said that?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: Yes. That was his suggestion; and I said I did not think it was feasible, and I said I could get in the boat if I could get hold of a rope. However, we got hold of a loose rope in some way that was hanging from the davit, near the block anyway, and by getting hold of this I swung myself off the ship, and lowered myself into the boat.
SENATOR SMITH: How far did you have to swing yourself?
MAJ. PEUCHEN: The danger was jumping off from the boat. It was not after I got a straight line; it was very easy lowering. But I imagine it was opposite the C deck at the time. On getting into the boat I went aft in the lifeboat, and said to the quartermaster, "What do you want me to do?" He said, "Get down and put that plug in," and I made a dive down for the plug, and the ladies were all sitting pretty well aft, and I could not see at all.

MAJ. PEUCHEN : Vingt-trois tous ensemble, avant d’être passager.
Par la suite, le canot a été abaissé sur une certaine distance, j’imagine qu’il était probablement parallèle au pont C, lorsque le quartier-maître a appelé l’officier pour lui dire : « Je ne peux pas gérer ce canot avec un seul matelot. »
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : D’où venait cet appel?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Pendant que le canot descendait, je pensais qu’il s’agissait du troisième pont. Il a donc fait cet appel à l’aide, et le second officier s’est penché et a vu qu’il avait tout à fait raison dans sa déclaration, qu’il n’y avait qu’un seul homme dans le canot, alors ils ont dit, "Nous allons devoir avoir plus de marins ici," et je ne pensais pas qu’ils étaient juste à portée de main, ou ils ont peut-être préparé le prochain canot. Cependant, j’étais à côté de l’officier, et j’ai dit : « Puis-je vous aider? Je suis un plaisancier et je peux m’occuper d’un canot à la place d’un marin. » Il a dit : «Pourquoi, oui. Je vais vous ordonner de vous rendre au canot et remplacer un marin.»
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Excusez-moi. Qui était cet homme dans le canot à ce moment-là?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : C’était l’un des quarter-maîtres. Le capitaine se tenait toujours à ses côtés à ce moment-là, et je pense que, même si l’officier m’a ordonné de monter dans le canot, le capitaine a dit : « Vous feriez mieux de descendre, de casser une fenêtre et d’entrer par une fenêtre dans le canot. »
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Le capitaine a dit cela ?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Oui. C’était sa suggestion; et j’ai dit que je ne pensais pas que c’était faisable, et j’ai dit que je pouvais monter dans le bateau si je pouvais tenir une corde. Cependant, nous avons obtenu la prise d’une corde lâche d’une certaine façon qui était suspendue au bossoir, près du bloc de toute façon, et en obtenant cette prise je me suis balancé hors du navire, et me suis abaissé dans le canot.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Jusqu’où avez-vous dû vous balancer?
MAJ. PEUCHEN : Le danger était de sauter du bateau. Ce n’était pas après que j’ai obtenu une ligne droite; c’était très facile à abaisser. Mais j’imagine que c’était en face du pont C à cet instant. En montant dans le canot, je suis allé vers l’arrière dans le canot de sauvetage et j’ai dit au quartier-maître, « Qu’attendez-vous de moi ? » Il a dit, "Descendez et mettez ce bouchon," et j’ai fait un plongeon vers le bas pour le bouchon, et les dames étaient toutes bien assises à l’arrière, et je ne pouvais pas voir du tout.
